Question. During devotions, should one meditate upon the form of Guru or meditate upon the form of God?

Answer. Whether you meditate upon the form of Guru or Bhagwan, the fruit will be the same for Both. It is not that by meditating on the form of Guru, Guru will bestow more power and by meditating on the form of Bhagwan, Bhagwan will bestow less power. However, one advantage of meditating on the form of Guru is that everything about Guru is perceptible and vivid, whereas the remembrance of the leelas and the Divine actions of Bhagwan, have to be imagined with the mind.

If Guru says, "You are mine," or if he gives you anything as prashadi, you will receive the benefit whether you accept it with faith or without faith; it will enhance your devotion. In addition to this, whatever Guru does (by way of his satsang and association) will be distinctly remembered by you. Thus, a devotee can again and again absorb his mind in the remembrance of his Guru's gracious actions and feel blessed. God is not visible, therefore His Divine leelas will have to be imagined with the mind.

It is easy to engage the mind in remembrance of anything that is visually perceptible. However, a devotee has the freedom to meditate upon God or Guru according to his heart's desire. (At the same time,) meditating upon the form of God alone will not do the job, although meditating on the form of Guru alone will help us reach our goal. It is the best to meditate upon the form of God along with that of Guru. By doing this you will steadily progress in your devotions without any difficulty.
